Austin, TX —GivePower, in collaboration with ServiceNow, is excited to announce the successful installation of a new Solar Water Farm Max in Athi River, Kenya. This system will produce up to 75,000 liters of safe drinking water every day, providing reliable and affordable access to safe water for more than 147,000 residents in Athi River and the neighboring community of Mlolongo.
Located southeast of Nairobi, Athi River is a fast-growing industrial town grappling with severe water insecurity. The river is heavily polluted, carrying uncollected waste, human sewage and chemical runoff, making the water unsafe to drink and contributing to ongoing waterborne illness. Without universal piped water and sewer systems, many families must buy costly water from vendors, rely on unsafe sources or depend on deliveries from more than 30 kilometers away.
“When a community’s closest water source is unsafe, the consequences show up quickly—in illness, lost school days, fewer economic opportunities and mounting costs for families,” said GivePower President, Michele Magee. “This project is about changing that reality with a reliable, safe alternative the community can count on.”
For years, residents and local leaders in Athi River and Mlolongo worked to find a long-term solution to the community’s water challenges. The new GivePower Solar Water Farm offers a sustainable solution that will provide residents with affordable access to safe, clean drinking water. Each Solar Water Farm utilizes solar energy to desalinate sea or brackish water sources. In addition to removing salt, the systems also eliminate other contaminants, such as bacteria, to create reliable, affordable sources of clean drinking water for communities in need.
This milestone was made possible with support from ServiceNow, whose commitment to sustainable community development has helped expand access to safe drinking water. Through its continued partnership with GivePower, ServiceNow has positively impacted the lives of over one million people worldwide.
The new GivePower Solar Water Farm marks a major milestone for Athi River, improving access to safe drinking water and supporting a stronger, healthier future for communities across the region.
