El Parque Nacional de Virunga, en la Rep\u00fablica Democr\u00e1tica del Congo, se considera una de las zonas con mayor biodiversidad del planeta y es el hogar de muchas especies de animales en peligro cr\u00edtico de extinci\u00f3n. Tambi\u00e9n es uno de los proyectos de conservaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s peligrosos del mundo.<\/p>\n

GivePower y el Congo: una biodiversidad incre\u00edble<\/h3>\n

El Parque Nacional de Virunga, en la Rep\u00fablica Democr\u00e1tica del Congo, se considera una de las zonas con mayor biodiversidad del planeta y es el hogar de muchas especies de animales en peligro cr\u00edtico de extinci\u00f3n. Tambi\u00e9n es uno de los proyectos de conservaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s peligrosos del mundo. El parque se enfrenta a amenazas constantes por parte de cazadores furtivos, invasores armados y prospectores de petr\u00f3leo. <\/span><\/p>\n

Solo unos pocos cientos de valientes guardabosques se encargan de proteger estas iniciativas de conservaci\u00f3n y m\u00e1s de 3,000 millas cuadradas de territorio. Enfrent\u00e1ndose a dificultades insuperables, estos guardabosques arriesgan sus vidas todos los d\u00edas. Lamentablemente, en abril de 2018, seis guardabosques cayeron en una emboscada y fueron asesinados mientras cumpl\u00edan con su deber.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hayes Barnard y GivePower: Instalaci\u00f3n de sistemas de comunicaciones<\/h3>\n

En 2016, GivePower instal\u00f3 tres microrredes para restablecer los sistemas de comunicaci\u00f3n cr\u00edticos y vitales para los guardabosques, as\u00ed como para proporcionar energ\u00eda para la cocina el\u00e9ctrica (lo que redujo a\u00fan m\u00e1s la necesidad de talar \u00e1rboles para obtener carb\u00f3n vegetal). Fue un honor poder ayudar de cualquier forma posible: brind\u00e1ndoles comodidades y recursos b\u00e1sicos; para hacerles saber que, en un mundo cruel, cuentan con aliados dispuestos a aliviar sus dificultades y apoyar su misi\u00f3n de salvar uno de los lugares m\u00e1s hermosos de la Tierra.<\/span><\/p>\n

En todos los aspectos, estos guardabosques llevaban una vida m\u00e1s dif\u00edcil que la de la mayor\u00eda de los que he visto: la comida era escasa, la log\u00edstica era complicada y las condiciones de vida eran espartanas. A pesar de los desaf\u00edos diarios que a la mayor\u00eda de nosotros nos har\u00edan llorar, estos guardabosques compart\u00edan una sensaci\u00f3n de calma, gratitud y buen \u00e1nimo. <\/span><\/p>\n

Me sent\u00ed seguro en un lugar muy peligroso, al igual que todo nuestro equipo. Sab\u00edan que estaban haciendo un buen trabajo, estaban orgullosos de ello, y eso les permiti\u00f3 afrontar los desaf\u00edos de la vida cotidiana con moderaci\u00f3n y humildad.<\/span><\/p>\n

A lo largo de mi trabajo en GivePower, me he encontrado con muchos h\u00e9roes que est\u00e1n haciendo lo que todos deber\u00edamos estar haciendo. Ellos cargan con el peso de un mundo injusto en nombre de todos nosotros. No se me ocurre un mejor ejemplo de esto que los hombres y mujeres que protegen Virunga.<\/span><\/p>\n
